In Sicily mushrooms (also called funcia, funci, funciu) are evaluated but also denigrated because they can be poisonous, in fact there’s a proverb warning “none cries for someone who dies for eating mushrooms”.
According to the varieties and the places they come from, they have different names. The most famous are funcia picurina or campagnòla; funcia di pani càudu; varvàzza; funci di pinu; funci di carroa; the well-known boletuses (boletus edulis) and finally bissinu di lupu (lycoperdon kind).
For each of these mushrooms I’ll give some information at the beginning of the concerning recipes.
I won’t be able to give you any information about funci di ferula: even if I know they are a speciality from Saint Mary from Licodia, I could never taste them, nor have any recipe about them.
