Peppers were unknown in past times; originated in South America and Brazil, they spread throughout the world only when Colombo discovered America.
They were imported to Europe in the 16th century but they’re were not welcomed so well for their spicy taste: initially we had only these varieties and the situation didn’t change until 19th-20th centuries, when we finally discover the sweeter and domestic varieties. Huge quantities of peppers are produced in glasshouses in Ragusa: this way we succeed in having peppers even in November and December.
In dialect peppers are called “pipi”, “pipiddi” or “pipuzzi”, but also “pipiardienti” that are spicy peperoncino, whose taste can be incredibly burning: peppers represent an indispensable ingredient for seasoning soups with legumes or vegetables, sauces and so on.
