Well-known fish for the proverbial ugliness and monstrosity of its head compared to the body. It’s brown coloured (black sea scorpion); or orange-reddish (red sea scorpion); or even with spots (“scorfanotto”); and finally dark (mud sea scorpion).
In dialect they are called in different ways: scrófanu 'mpiriàli, cipùdda, scrófanu di sicca the first; cipùdda gaddaràna, capiddàzza and many others, the second; scórfana tignùsa, ócchiu béddu, occhi russi the “scorfanotto”; and fasciànu, cipùdda, the last one.
They are generally cooked in soups, but they can be also and dressed with tomato sauce; or even bake in oven.
